Hi Everyone! Today I’d like to share with you my first attempt at Ikat Nails. Although I completed this manicure back in August, my Dad’s passing and the subsequent emotional whirlwind delayed the accompanying blog post until now. Fortunately the colors I used (purple, orange, black and white) are quite applicable to the upcoming Halloween holiday!
For this manicure I used the following supplies:
- Nail Polishes: Essie Boxer Shorts, Van D’Go, and Blanc
- Black Acrylic Paint
- Small Nail Art Detailing Brush
I started out by painting my nails with an opaque base of Essie Boxer Shorts. Once this was completely dry, I added two irregularly shaped white triangles to each of my nails with Essie Blanc and the small nail art detailing brush. The irregularity of the triangles is key here ~ it’s what’s gives the Ikat design it’s unique, eye-catching quality.
I then outlined the white triangles in peach using Essie Van D’Go and my nail art detailing brush. To ensure the outline turns out with those wispy edges characteristic of the Ikat design, only use a little bit of polish on the brush and apply it with short, flicking motions.
I used the same technique to outline the peach with wispy black edges using black acrylic paint. I also went in and added the small black triangles to the center of the Ikat triangles on each nail.
I let the design dry for a good 20 minutes and then applied topcoat. Don’t be too hasty to apply that topcoat ~ if you do it too soon after completing the design you risk causing the polish to run which can ruin your hard work.
What do you think of this Ikat design? This manicure holds a special place in my heart because of what was going on in my personal life at the time I painted it, so I naturally adore this one. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
